By now, you know there’s a gnome in Left 4 Dead 2. He’s even in the Dark Carnival poster, standing just behind Ellis (see above).
He was last seen in Half-Life 2: Episode 2. Most of us spotted him near the beginning of the game, and a very few of us saw him near the end of the game as well, having carried him the entire way through the adventure and stuffed him into a rocket to get an achievement.
I never got this achievement, never even tried — while I sometimes break my back to get achievements, this one was a few hundred thousand steps too far. When I saw there was an achievement for carrying the gnome through a campaign of Left 4 Dead 2, I figured I wouldn’t bother with it, especially since I knew one person would most definitely bother.
Yes, Tom Francis has once again carried something through a game, and has once again written about it. For this, we salute you.

I wonder if Valve will retroactively introduce gnomes to all their games.

I carried that gnome through the whole Ep2. Not an easy task, I’m tellin’ ya! But the satisfaction… Oh, man!

It is pretty funny seeing that gnome in a little red box in Dark Carnival. Me and my friend DID bust him out but we ended up leaving him to his fate outside the tunnel of love.
Also, in regards to your twitter post about the survivors - I definitely would rate Coach above Ellis! And definitely miles above boring Rochelle. God she is so boring! She does one thing that makes me smile, and that’s when she nabs a health kit she says “Nope, no health kit here, guys!”

This one is a lot easier, since you can just breeze through on easy, and there are no cars to drive in, and no helicopters shooting at you while you are driving a car trying to keep a gnome from falling out.

Just got this one myself, inspired by Tom’s blog, and came up with the same pun you did for the title.
And since I’m here, I’ma do survivors from favorite to least, just for the helluvit: Francis, Nick, Bill, Coach, Ellis, Zoey, Louis, Rochelle.
November 23, 2009
Personally, I like Bill best (I have a softspot for veterans, they are cool), then Nick. I really hate all the others, except Louis, which is OK. Why do you hate Nick so much, Chris? He is the sunshine of hope for in L4D2. The other characters really tick me off.
So… what’s going on with your huge post, Chris?

Best.
Pun.
Ever.

The Gnome in L4D2?
What’s next, the Sandvich in Ep3?
November 23, 2009
It’s really not as hard as you think to do this. The HL2 one was much harder.

That article had me in stitches. Francis is a funny bastard.
He and you, Chris, inspired me to chronicle my own journey with ‘Troy’ (Someone christened him that, can’t remember who) to the rocket.
I ‘Tubed it:

well…a gnome…again!…
fuck i hated this achievement in orange box and i’m fairly sure i’m gonna hate it again here.
then again, i know a friend that went through a whole campaign in L4D1 bashing everything with a med-kit just so he could get the no friendly-fire one after trying for a whole month.
Maybe he can carry it?

I guess I’m the only one who thought the gnome achievement in Ep. 2 was actually kind of fun and not that hard? The worst part was that car. Oh, the car. Yeah, that was kind of not fun.
Apart from trying to stick a gnome into a car and stopping every few minutes to pick him up, it wasn’t that bad. Just drop the thing when it’s time to start shooting, then come back and pick him up. Plus, when you leave the Vorticons with Alyx, you can drop the little fellow to watch over here and go through all that part without having to worry about the gnome. I didn’t find it impossibly difficult, and thought it was a nice little challenge.
And hurrah for more posting.

Of all the achievements I’ve ever gotten, Little Rocket Man is the only one I can say I’m proud of.
November 24, 2009
gnome carrying achievements need to be introduced into every game ever made.
November 24, 2009
I used the no-die cheat in Ep. 3, so it wasn’t that hard to carry the gnome. I don’t have L4D2 yet, but I’m sure I’ll do that achievement with some of my friends.
Here are my survivors: Zoey, Francis, Ellis, Louis, Coach, Rochelle, Nick. I’m disappointed with Rochelle from what I’ve read and what little of the game I have played (the demo and parts at my brother’s friend’s house). She’s kinda bland and not really all that funny.

I have read Shouter for a long time, but this is the first time I comment.
The first and second times I played Ep 2 I didn’t even pay any attention to the Gnome.
The third time I decided to carry the Gnome with me. It took the whole day. Sometimes I was so fed up that I whacked the Gnome with my crowbar for ten minutes.
But, I got the achievement. Woot.

I helped Tom and got in one of his screenshots :D

There’s a gnome in Portal too! (hint: it’s inside the companion cube).
November 25, 2009
I’m sure there are personal and real life reasons for Chris not posting his extremely long blog post, but I care not. I CARE NOT.
November 25, 2009
My survivor list: Zoey, Louis, Nick, Francis, Ellis, Bill, Coach, Rochelle
Zoey for being the gamer, Louis for being the average man, Nick for being a conman, Francis for hating everything, Ellis for Keith, Bill for his hat, Coach because “I want ahmoh!” And that leaves Rochelle for last.

Oh, boy… here comes an obnoxious recurring meme with gnomes in every subsequent Valve title from now on…
November 26, 2009
I got the achievement in single-player on easy. I only died once, when I accidentally left the gnome on a part of the coaster I couldn’t walk back to, and needed to suicide-by-zombie-taunting to restart the level. Which wasn’t easy because my AI companions kept trying to “help” me. :)
Most parts of the campaign are safe to leave the gnome to clear the path ahead and come back, but make sure you don’t drop him before the steep drop on the coaster (or some other obvious part of the level that you can’t backtrack) and it’s otherwise pretty easy. Might try it again on normal or hard.
Protip: Right click to smack zombies with the gnome just like with guns. The gnome doesn’t count as a melee weapon, but you can still do normal alt-fire melee damage/shove-back with him.

I want to have Tom Francis baby.

Ohoho, L4D2 is now on discount for $37.49. I totally saw it coming. Punch prepurchasers in the face, Valve, it’s the only way they will learn.
November 27, 2009
What was that blog you started and abandoned, Chris? I remember reading it about a year ago. It chronicled carrying the gnome through Episode 2. Obviously, I also thought that you were the author of “Farewell brave traveler! May I never, ever set eyes on your stupid fucking face again!”
November 27, 2009
I guess it was just a repost of Tom’s post.
November 29, 2009
My friend has L4D2 on Xbox (I’m waiting till it gets to under $25 on Steam) and we got the Gnome achievement quite easily. He just ran around bashing with it while I used the autoshotty to clear the way.
