A couple weeks ago I sat down to write a post about Just Cause 2. I wanted to talk about the fun, silly nature of the combat and violence in the game without writing a proper review (something I don’t feel I’m particularly good at).
I eventually decided to present the post in the nature of a police blotter, the kind you sometimes see in small-town newspapers, that detail generally boring incidents of fist-fights and drunken jerks and minor vandalism. I had a fun time writing about the sudden escalation of ridiculous violence in Panau in that fashion, and from the comments posted, it seemed to get a good response.
Since I enjoyed it so much, I thought it might be fun to write an entire newspaper, not just about Just Cause 2 but about other games I’m playing and have played in the past. So, I did.
It’s called The First-Person Observer. The concept is a gaming news site that reports strictly on news from inside video games, as if I’ve employed a staff of reporters to scour the innards of all the games we play and report directly on the happenings they witness. (It’ll make sense once you see the site, I swear.) It’s given me the chance to write about old games as well as new ones, specific games as well as general game mechanics and tropes, and lets me pretend that all games take place inside the same rather ridiculous universe.
For the site launch, I’ve got five featured stories up, and six more general stories. I will be adding more to the tune of (hopefully) two or three a week from now on.
First-Person Shouter isn’t going anywhere; The Observer is just a companion site for that type of meta-humor, fake-news writing that I really enjoy. I still want to have this site to blog from my own perspective about the games I’m playing and whatever else is going on. But I’m very excited to launch the Observer — I spent this past week feverishly writing these stories and building the site, and it’s honestly the most I’ve fun I’ve had writing since I did Concerned, and maybe the first few weeks of Living in Oblivion.
You can subscribe to The Observer’s twitter feed to be informed of breaking news alerts if you want. The site also has RSS feed and e-mail subscriptions.
One final note: there are some advertisements on the site. I decided I spend far too much time creating and abandoning websites to continue to do so without earning a little ad revenue on the side. If you find them too intrusive or distracting, please feel free to let me know and I’ll see what I can do to tone them down.
Thanks! I really hope you like The Observer; I am having a lot of fun writing it. Check it out and let me know what you think.

And that was awesome! Cheering for more!

Awesome, Mr. Livingston. Pure awesome.
April 16, 2010
Here’s hoping for this not causing every site in operation to never update, ever!
April 16, 2010
Hmm, odd that this suddenly goes up just as the volcanic ash cloud grounds European flights. He’s obviously moonlighting as an airliner pilot.
Also, this is frickin’ awesome.
April 16, 2010
Love it!

I have one response to this development:
**** YES!!!
That is all.

Dude, nobody running a free website should ever feel bad about putting up a little advertising. As long as it’s not one of those big fully-animated things that blocks out half the screen and can’t be closed, that is.
April 16, 2010
UH OH, another one of Chris’ crazy gaming news schemes.
jk, lol, looks great
April 16, 2010
Haha, great stuff. Don’t worry about the ads, I think they make it feel more like an actual news site.
April 16, 2010
Crazy. Fucking. Awesome.
I greatly approve.
April 16, 2010
Always thought you should get paid for writing, so ads are not a problem. =)
April 16, 2010
The site looks FANTASTIC. Seriously, it’s very well organized.
Are you going to open up the First Person Observer to outside contributions?
April 16, 2010
Pure win.
April 16, 2010
Is there anything on there about that recent shepherd’s pie theft?
April 16, 2010
win
April 16, 2010
Holyfudgeawesomepie!
April 16, 2010
The site is great, very unique in the game-space. Don’t be ashamed at all about the ads they’re even less intrusive then actual news websites and they make it feel more authentic.
April 16, 2010
Pretty damn awesome. Are you going to take this somewhere, or was this just for fun? You have a lot of potential. I suggest showing this to as many people, professional gaming sites especially, as possible. Take this as far as you can.
April 16, 2010
I turned AdBlocking off on it, for you, Mr. Chris, you deserve all the hard earned revenue you can get.
April 16, 2010
Fantastic idea, compelling implementation!
The thing I find exciting; most of the comments I have seen so far appear to be on the same vain, as if written by others within the universe the articles are about, making the site seem even more authentic.
April 17, 2010
Haha, good news. I liked the panau police blotter and I was just thinking it’d be great if you did more stuff like it.
April 17, 2010
Love the new site, it’s hilarious!
I agree with Andy Pearson, people writing comments as if they are in the same world really adds to the feel of authenticity.
April 17, 2010
I love this idea!
April 17, 2010
Pretty good site. In addition to the Real Ads, you should put some Fake Ads in there. Like a recruiting poster for The Alliance.
April 17, 2010
RSS feed needs fixing. See http://www.madtinkerer.org and scroll down a little to see the exciting story about “test for feed”. Or if you’ve fixed it already, it should have a link to the latest FPO post instead.
April 17, 2010
Your right, First-Person Shouter ISNT going anywhere, wink wink. JK still love ya Chris
April 17, 2010
That site is just full of so much win.

Don’t worry about the advertising, put as much of it in there as you want, heck, make 80% of the website ads. Nobody using Firefox will see them anyway. =D
April 18, 2010
Dude, you should put ads on this site, I don’t think anybody gives a damn, and you could make some extra money. All your fans only want the best for you, consider how much you could save on hosting!
Also, can we be best friends?
April 18, 2010
Sorry about the double post,
I agree with John, fans should make fake ads to go on the site!
Think of the awesome, eventually you could accept fan articles, I think you actually make some real money on First Person Observer if you can get a dedicated audience and writers.
April 18, 2010
…wow.
I saw the site on RPS, go, read all the articles, think they are funny, come here, see that you created it, and somehow didn’t notice the connection until coming here.
Regardless, nice job. Very funny articles, I hope the site catches fire (In a good way). I’ll be telling all of my friends, real life and otherwise.
April 18, 2010
Here’s betting it’s updated once or twice for a few months, becomes popular and then suddenly never gets updated unless it’s mentioned in PCGamer.
April 18, 2010
How about the First Person Observer lonely hearts column?
April 19, 2010
Sh!t man, I have enjoyed concerned, 1Fort, First-Person Shouter so much I would not complain in the slightest about ads man. You sir, rock sir.
April 19, 2010
He can go ages without updating and still pull off all this awesome shit. Epic Win.
April 19, 2010
I just read a few lines of the observer and finally stopped to prevent my mouth from cramping in a really ugly kind of smile.
One night after reading the panau blotter, it seemed so obvious to do a newspaper in this style. The existence itself screemed for this newspaper to come true. And now it is real. Oh my Chris! I think we are witnessing to the birth of a new format spreading all over the universe.
April 19, 2010
This is like the Onion for gamers. I fully approve.
April 21, 2010
Wow Chris, I love this new site. And don’t worry about the adverts, they are not that intrusive.
Please keep up your awefully funny news creations!
April 21, 2010
I’ll get excited if it’s not abandoned by the end of the month.
j/k, this really is a neat idea.
But seriously try to update at least once a month.
April 23, 2010
well, great news, but mate, do you have any general-mail! or a fan mail, or stuff?
i just want to tell you some stuff about how m. i like your stuff.
also, new blog?
wtf april fools? it’s earl 4 that
April 23, 2010
anyways, love tha new developments, if (its true), that is, matte
yea..
also, what other things you plan, story making, or any game comic/series-or thing?!!
April 24, 2010
It would be cool if users could submit stories. Sure this may result in some “troll” articles, but you should be able to find some way to regulate it, like having other users review them before being posted, or some automated system that rejects stories with TOO much vulgarity.
April 28, 2010
Well, user submitted stuff is kind of iffy because you have forums that might find it lulzy to post some article that is either stupid or has “NSFW” content (pronz) and will spam post it.
The only way I could see it is to maybe pick people from the comment section (There is a brilliant number of commenters, I try to contribute when I can) to get a few people capable of doing articles, but then you could have people accidentally stealing ideas.
April 29, 2010
Brilliant! I love this satire. Witty punchlines, clever observations, top quality work.
Sorry, comments for this entry are closed at this time.
